Tourist Envy: Getting up and Going

by Helene Goupil

Greg Greunke is a San Francisco native who metaphorically pitched his career over the Golden Gate Bridge one day and went to Asia.

When I met Greg in Kyoto, Japan, we were living in a hostel where most tenants were English teachers. I think we started talking as we were cooking on the metered stove and our friendship grew as we sang horribly at karaoke.

We asked him to share his thoughts on his traveling lifestyle.

What were you doing before traveling?
Before setting off for Asia I was an Account Executive for a promotions agency.

“The Taipei sky is a lovely walnut color that coats your tongue with a bitter aluminum taste.”

What made you decide to leave it all?
It started simply by telling my sister I was looking for a new job. As the conversation progressed over dinner she finally suggested that I take a trip to Asia because I had such a deep interest in that part of the world. I liked the idea, but I wasn't convinced.

Several days later I was driving to work across the Golden Gate bridge and I noticed some tourists walking along the bridge. It struck me how thrilled they were to be visiting this place I plodded by every day. I realized that sense of wonderment and excitement needed to be put back in my life and decided at that moment that I was leaving.
