WHEN IN HOME: ATW TICKETS

One-Way Ticket Around the World

by Helene Goupil

When you’re planning on traveling to more than one country, don’t even bother trying to add up one way tickets. If you think traveling around the world is only for the
jet set, get set to learn about the cheapest way of literally becoming a globe trotter.

If you’re willing to travel in one direction and stop in some funky (that's good and bad funky) places, a trip around the world is only a grand or two away.

Most travel agencies and online booking services don't offer good deals on multi-destination tickets, and if you go for their prices you'll probably end up about $3,000 lighter. So, if you find yourself having to buy three roundtrip tickets and keep coming back home to afford your awaited 6-month trip around the globe, consider getting an around-the-world ticket.

An around-the-world ticket is a combination of one-way tickets. The only rule is you have to keep traveling in the same direction. You have two choices: east or west.

As long as you don’t backtrack, you can add destinations and keep traveling for up to a year. All you have to do is plan your trip ahead of time and then change your arrival and departure dates as you go.

Some airlines may hit you with a change fee, but it is usually minimal. Say you meet a hottie on the way and want a quickie two-day side trip? Just book an extra round-trip ticket from the city you’re currently in.

Hub requirements

Around-the-world travel agencies work with airlines that sometimes require a passenger to stop in its main hub. This is great if the main hub happens to be Papeete, Tahiti, and your layover is spent drinking Mai Tais on the beach. However, you’ll be a lot less excited if you get stuck in Detroit for seven hours.

Steps to an around-the-world trip

So, my fearless adventurer, how do you plan an around-the-world trip?
