A TRAVELER'S LIFE

Hey, Ho, Let’s Go

by Helene Goupil

Budget travelers have been swearing by the Let’s Go bible for over forty years and seeing the well-researched and useful books that keep coming out of the Harvard University office, it doesn’t look like anything’s about to change.

The Let’s Go story started with a group of Harvard University students in 1960. Combining their past experiences from trips and their budget travel know-how, the group of friends compiled a 20-page booklet to help fellow students travel to Europe on the cheap.

The booklet was so popular that the students went back to work and published the first Let’s Go guidebook the following year.

While other guidebook publishers included restaurants and accommodations that ranged from budget to luxurious, Let’s Go stayed budget and to this day, readers are not likely to see a four star spot in their books.

The most recent addition to their long list of guidebooks is “Roadtripping USA, The Complete Coast to Coast Guide to America.” This book was researched and written in the Let’s Go tradition— by a group of Harvard students and with the help of editors, including Tom Mercer. Tell us about yourself, where are you from and where you are right now.

I'm from Dallas, Texas, I currently live in New York and work as the editor for the Let’s Go guidebooks at St. Martin's Press, the publisher of the series. I've been in travel publishing for over five years now, having started at Let’s Go as a writer.

"The key to having a good time while traveling is to put aside all your expectations (which is a hard thing to do), and just take it one day at a time."bar

You started at Let’s Go as a researcher, and you're now an editor there. Can you tell us more about that, how you got involved with Let’s Go?

My first Let’s Go assignment was a summer job for me—I traveled to Alaska and hopped ferries and small planes all the way from Ketchikan on the Inside Passage up to Fairbanks.
