Well, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that maybe these days you’re better off renting a car than dealing with all the security, cost, and hassle of taking an airplane.

Car rentals aren’t the only cheap option. You can often maximize adventure bang-for-buck by taking slow boats (to China, yes) instead of flying, public trains instead of tourist minivans, and, occasionally, hitch-hiking instead of driving.

It may seem like common sense, but ever since a ticketing debacle a few holiday seasons ago with a major airline, I’ve decided that it’s often better and much cheaper to rent a car and split the cost with another person or two.

You may be able to recruit other cheap travelers into your harem. The secret of cheap rental cars is www.priceline.com, just be careful to not paint yourself into a corner as you have to change your options with each new bid and can’t just start with a low bid and work your way up. Sure, the drive from LA to Phoenix may not be so exciting, but when you figure that door-to-door time is only about twice as long for a fraction of the cost that barren stretch of desert you’re driving through will start shimmering like an oasis of savings. "Dress like a woman (if you’re not one already) and show a little leg on the side of the road. Maybe someone famous like Eddy Murphy will pick you up.” And, don’t forget ride-shares, you can start at a local college or look on whatever e-bulletin board is most popular in your city.
