New beginnings, new beginnings gotta' have those new beginnings...
New Route Through Bangkok Tired commuters in Bangkok will soon have an alternative to tuk tuk fumes and nightmarish traffic jams with the arrival of the Bangkok Metro. Although the subway is still in its testing stage, Bangkok residents should be able to ride the subway as soon as this summer. The inaugural route includes 18 stations stretching 12 miles from the northern suburbs to the edge of bustling Chinatown. When all the lines are completed—expected by the end of the decade—the combined subway and above ground system will stretch for 69 miles. Tickets on the new subway system will cost from 14 to 36 baht (35 to 92 cents), but the BMTA is negotiating with the Bangkok Metro and Skytrain operators in a bid to unite the two systems into an integrated and affordable transport system. Still
too expensive for the average resident, the company wants to eventually
integrate the canal boats and buses with the Skytrain and subway on
one ticket, allowing unlimited travel for up to three hours at a cost
of about 20 baht. more

15 or 25—All for One May 1, 2004
marked a grand celebration with fireworks and street celebrations throughout
Europe, especially in the ten new Eastern European countries which joined
the EU. These new additions reunite a continent scarred by decades of
Cold War conflict. For East Europeans in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, enlargement crowns 15 years of often painful economic reforms since the collapse of communist rule. ``We are returning to where we belong, to a community that shares the same values and visions,'' Estonian Prime Minister Juhan Parts of Estonia said in the former Soviet republic. One of the fathers of European reunification, a tearful former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, told thousands at a ceremony in Zittau on the German-Czech-Polish border: ``The message is there will never again be war in Europe.'' Want to be a travel writer…and get a free trip to Europe? Enter the Bakpak travelers guide third annual travel writing essay contest and you can win a one month travel assignment to Europe to help the publishing company research and write the fifth edition of the Bakpak Travelers Guide to Europe—to be published as an E-book and on a print-on-demand basis. The travel assignment will take place between July and October, 2004. The contest began March 1, 2004 and ends June 30, 2004. more >>
