A TRAVELER'S LIFE

Ian Taylor, "Faces of the World" Contest Winner

by Helene Goupil

Ian Taylor grew up in Picton, Ontario, a small town on Lake Ontario. He is now based in Toronto and as of 2004, he’s attempting to make a living with his photography. His specialty is candid photography of children. It sounds like he’s getting around because Ian told us he was in Bangkok, heading to Hanoi, when we contacted him to congratulate him on winning the grand prize of our “Faces of the World” photo contest.

We loved his subject matter and the expressions he was able to get on film. It seems like a good photographer anticipates emotion more than recognizes it since in the fraction of a second from recognition to shutter-click most expressions change and disappear. We weren’t surprised to hear that he spends some time with his subjects before taking a photo, trying to get a bead on their emotional wavelength.

To find out a little more about the man behind the great pictures, we asked Ian a few questions.

Tell us about the photo you submitted to the contest.
This shot was taken at the Bayon temple at Angkor Wat in 1999. I was based
in Cambodia for six years, from 1994 until 2000. In 1999, my folks came to visit
and I took them around a bunch of countries.

While at Angkor I found myself chatting to this old woman (in Khmer). As my father made his way up the stairs to the top of the temple she asked me who he was. When I replied that he was my father she asked me how old he was. I said "69, almost 70."

"I'm 69 almost 70!" she replied. Connection made, I asked to take a picture and
this was the result.

How has traveling inspired you with your photography?
It is the only reason I'm a photographer.

Do you see yourself as a photographer who travels or a traveler who likes to
take photos?

Now, I'm a photographer who travels.
