Returning from Neverland

by Greg Greunke

Do you remember a fantastic picture book you enjoyed as a child? Written beneath each illustration, in large black print, was a story about a boy named Peter Pan—a boy who promised he’d never grow up.

On his adventures, he flew from place to place. He met mermaids and fairies; he laughed out loud as he ran from ticking crocodiles and wicked pirates.

If you found this book today, you might be surprised to find you had drawn all over it with your crayons. On one page, you may even find a blue and yellow stick figure standing next to Peter Pan and a large green arrow where you have scribbled in block letters “ME.”

This is the guidebook I carry with me on my travels. I’ve swam with mermaids in the sea off the coast of Thailand. In Laos, I splashed through waterfalls chasing a beautiful fairy. When I met pirates in Morocco, I didn’t laugh but I’ll tell you a story that will chill you to the bone and when I finish I laugh, because it was a great adventure.

“The world needs people to hold down the fort but you and I are not one of them.'”

I guess you could say I live in Neverland.

Life is good in Neverland, but, like all things in life, there is a consequence to living here and playing this game. As each year passes, I find it harder to find my way back home.

When I saw my family this year, we picked up right were we had left off but I couldn’t quite recognize my town.

The children I knew had lost their sparkle. They’ve grown bushy beards and baggy eyes. They’re so serious. Instead of talks of adventure, they can only share with me their concerns and responsibilities.
