Give it Tuva Boy

A little less than two years ago, Carl Pezold put an ad online to sublet his apartment. He was leaving for Tuva a few days later and needed someone to cover the rent.

Josh and I had just landed in San Francisco and were looking for jobs and a place to stay. We saw the ad and ended up living in Carl’s apartment for the month he was away. When he left, Josh and I knew that he would probably turn out to be of a good friend if we stayed in San Francisco.

Well, Carl came back, went to Russia again a few times and he’s now back for a while and yes, we are now friends.

What are you doing now?

I’m in San Francisco and I promote adventure and eco-tours for Aspera Explorations. We offer tours in places like Siberia, the Himalayas and India. I have fun promoting nomadic Central Asian cultures.

I like coming up with fun ideas, ways to bring people together and learn about each other. I see that as my mission, to get people that normally wouldn’t meet, to get them to talk and realize that they have things in common.

I organize a lot of events and what makes me very happy is to see people exchanging phone numbers at these events.

“I managed eight countries, went to big embassy parties, and traveled all over Central Asia.”

Can you tell us about your travels?

Growing up, my dad had three or four conventions to go to every year so the whole family would go to places like Orlando, Chicago or Dallas. So, I traveled a lot like that. My mom is a museum buff and she would drag us kids to all the museums in San Diego, Minneapolis or wherever we were.
