A young member of the Hmong tribe looks out from her mud-floored hut somewhere in northern Laos to see me and my posse of four foreigners.

Later, we entered the hut and arranged to have one of the tribe’s members show us one of their communal poppy plantations, which was about a two-hour walk from the village.
