Dengue Fever – Catch it! Or Not

by Amy Loftsgordon

I caught a bus leaving San Juan del Sur for Granada, which was theoretically, ‘first class.’ Well, if by first class you mean riding with several chickens, caged fortunately, and one piglet (not caged) but cute at least, then I guess it was first class—Nicaraguan style.

About two and a half hours later, I stepped off the bus in the center of Granada and was overwhelmed with an incredible sense of excitement. After weeks of traveling through Central America, I was looking forward to a spending a few relaxing days in Central America’s oldest Spanish colonial town.

Granada was founded in 1524 and lies at the edge of Lake Nicaragua. It contains 16th century Spanish architecture, plazas, monuments, and tiled sidewalks. It is rumored to be a fantastic location for learning Spanish, Nicaraguan history, and Latino culture. The only downside to Granada, as far as I could tell, were the giant mosquitoes that followed me as I searched for a suitable hospedaje, or guesthouse.

Before leaving home for Central America, I had contemplated purchasing a bottle of 100% DEET mosquito repellant called “Jungle Juice,” but opted to save a few bucks and passed on the purchase. What difference is a small percentage in DEET content going to make, right?

Around 11 p.m. that night, I crawled beneath the sheets in my room at the Hospedaje Cocibolca excited about the day ahead.

At 6 a.m. I woke up feeling horrible. I was incredibly nauseated, my head felt as though someone were stabbing my brain with an ice pick. My body hurt everywhere, and I clearly had a fever since I had drenched my sheets with sweat.
